Didn’t make it home for Mardi Gras yet again, but this year I was able to see this. ***if blood makes you squeamish, then this will not be one of your favorite sets***
Chinese-Khmer belief where Shamans are possessed by a revered Chinese Grandfather Spirit which makes them oblivious to pain. They then cut their tongues and then lick pieces of paper which people buy for good luck & fortune. Also saw them wipe blood on small flags and even spit directly onto people. Celebrated around 2 weeks after Chinese New Year in conjunction with the Full Moon.

These guys have put together an amazing series of videos, though I must say the Cambodian segment really touches a cord. No matter where my family and I end up landing in the future, a piece of my heart will always live here in Cambodia. And the choice to use a portion of Moonface’s “Dreamland EP: Marimba and Shit Drums” for the music is a perfect.
